Saving Energy

One third of all CO2 emissions in the UK comes from our homes. If you are thinking about updating your boiler and or integrating renewable technologies, you can not only significantly lower your property’s carbon emissions, but can save you up to a 3rd of your energy usage.

As well as looking at the energy usage, it is important to minimise wasted energy. Simple steps such as loft insulation should also be carried out. Further advice on Saving Energy around your home can be found on the Energy Saving Trust website.

UK boiler manufacturers utilize a standard assessment to apply an energy band that is uniform across the industry, this energy banding is called SEDBUK, which was developed under the Government’s Energy Efficiency Best Practice Programme with the co-operation of boiler manufacturers.

SEDBUK stands for Seasonal Efficiency of Domestic Boilers in the UK, which indicates how efficient an appliance is. An ‘A’ rated appliance relates to the highest energy banding and means that for every £1 spent on gas 90p is being used to heat your home, with 10p being lost. The table below shows all the energy bandings.

Saving Energy by Maintaining your Boiler

When you buy a boiler its efficiency can be affected by several factors, therefore it is important for you to ensure correct maintenance and care of your heating system to maximise your energy savings.

Before your new boiler is installed the heating system should be flushed by your Gas Safe Registerâ„¢ Engineer. Putting a new boiler onto a heating system that has not been flushed can result in loss of efficiency and even damage to your new boiler. For details on flushing and cleaning of your system speak to your Gas Safe Registerâ„¢ Engineer.

Once your new boiler is installed you should get a service and safety check every year. This ensures that the appliance is working as it should and that it’s efficiency is maintained. A poorly maintained boiler can seriously affect its efficiency.

Saving Energy with central heating programmers

A central heating programmer allows you to set your appliance to come on at different times, and can save a lot of wasted energy and fuel usage.

If you do not have a central heating programmer, you should consider investing in one. Many wireless programmers are now available on the market so that installation can be carried our relatively simply.

Vokèra offer a range of central heating programmers to complement our range of boilers, you can find details of the programmers suitable for which appliances on each product page.

Saving energy with renewable products
